Guide to the Collection of the Centro de Arte Moderna José Azeredo Perdigão

The Guide to the Collection of the Centro de Arte Moderna José Azeredo Perdigão was recently published. It includes 139 Artists considered representative of this collection.

The current Guidebook replaces the small guide published in 1996 and proposes a deeper approach on each artist, Cover from Guide to the Collection as well as a history of the museum and the collection, a comparative chronology and innumerous bibliographical references. It also includes new acquisitions.

Available in Portuguese and English

Five Chapters
In addition to an alphabetical index with all the artist’s names, artist information is organized into five encompassing chapters. Modernism brings together 18 artists from the “first” and “second” Portuguese Modernisms, until the 1940s.

Artists of the 1940s and 1950s encompasses a precise temporal definition from the emergence of Neo-Realism to Surrealism and abstractionism, representing 19 artists.
From the ruptures of the1960s onwards, the longest chapter with 63 entries, establishes a multidirectional panorama of artists whose fresh languages renovated the national artistic context in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The Most recent years groups a total 29 artists who emerged in Portugal during the 1990’s.

The last chapter, Encounters, brings together a small set of ten foreign artists that have developed relationships with Portuguese artists, mainly during the first half of the 20th century.

Editorial Criteria
The texts present the artists biographical journey as well as an interpretative and at times critical understanding of the work.
The majority of entries are accompanied by an image of an art work , occasionally, by two. A selective bibliography and a note regarding the number of works each artist has in the collection complete complete each entry.
